Wagging
Tales
Wagging
Tales is a Reading Readiness program of the SPCA of Central Florida,
designed for children K - 3 grades. The ability to read is the key to
success in all subject areas, and dogs are the tool used to unlock the
love of reading in a young child.
Each child
is assigned a specific volunteer team. Each week, dogs and their trained
volunteers meet with their students in a one-on-one setting. Children
are encouraged to select the books of their own choosing, books based
on their specific interests. A variety of incentives and games are used
to keep children involved with the learning process. At the end of the
series, each child is presented with books to encourage them to begin
creating their own home library.
The program
was designed, and is presented in cooperation, with the Adult Literacy
League of Central Florida. Of course, written parental consent and support
are required for a child's participation in the program.
A variety
of sites throughout the tri-county area are used for Wagging Tales,
including libraries and community centers. Not just ordinary house pets,
the dogs are four-footed "canine reading assistants." With
the support of the volunteer, children read books aloud to their "canine
reading assistants," and with each week, the child's confidence
increases. One child said it best - "The dog won't laugh at me
when I make a mistake." After all, everyone who has ever owned
a dog knows, no matter what, they just keep wagging their tales!
