VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

We invite you to visit our Orlando and Sanford Shelters as a part of the application process. We are proud of our facilities and love to
have community members visit!

Hours of Operation at both shelter locations are:
Monday through Saturday, 10:00am - 5:00pm and
Sunday, 12:00noon - 4:00pm

We cannot accept court ordered community service.

Thank you for choosing the SPCA of Central Florida to
Volunteer your Time and Talent!

    • BARK BUDDIES - Even with all the activity in our shelter, dogs may get bored. They needfriends to talk with and to take them to the Exercise Yard for a good game of "toss-the-ball-over-and-over-again." In addition, some dogs need help with their manners, and volunteers may help teach them basic commands. BARK BUDDIES work hard and have fun spending time with a variety of dogs, in addition to helping potential adopters select a new family member.

    • KITTY CUDDLERS - Who says cats are independent? Not us! Cats and kittens need lots of attention to help them adjust to temporarily living in a shelter. When volunteers hold them, pet them, play with them and talk with them, it helps the cats put their best "paw" forward, and it helps potential adopters see their individual purr-sonalities. As a KITTY CUDDLER, you will assist with keeping the cats social and help potential adopters select a new family member.
    • FOSTER CARE - Even with the wonderful shelters at the SPCA of Central Florida, some pets have special needs that are best met by being cared for in homes of FOSTER CARE volunteers. Young animals, animals recovering from illness or surgery, animals needing special training or one-on-one attention, and animals of families in crisis are just some of the pets who thrive in the homes of FOSTER CARE volunteers.
Foster families first attend the Bark Buddies/Kitty Cuddlers training.
To minimize stress on the foster pet and any pets of your own,
it is important foster families have appropriate space at home.
    • OFFICE WIZARDS - Typing and mailing and labeling - OH, MY! Behind the scenes of the shelter and the medical clinics are volunteers helping staff manage the information and paperwork needed to support our programs and services. Hundreds of pieces of information are routinely entered into our database so we can keep in touch with our supporters. All types of educational materials need to be photocopied and distributed to adopters on a regular basis.
Office Wizards may volunteer on an ongoing basis
Monday through Friday, 9am - 5pm,
or just for special projects. Intermediate computer skills are highly desirable.
    • PARTY ANIMALS - There's more to managing a successful fundraising event or a community project than just making a contribution. Each event, whether large or small, takes months of planning. PARTY ANIMALS work on developing the concept and flow of the event, help solicit donations needed for the special event or community project, raise community awareness, help develop and distribute promotional materials, take photographs, sell tickets, serve as ambassadors, set-up, clean-up…….Whew!
Party Animals must volunteer for at least 2 events per year.
    • PET FOOD XPRESS - Senior citizens on fixed incomes are able to feed their companion animals without sacrificing their personal nutrition because of this program. PFX volunteers either conduct periodic pet food drives or pick up and deliver food containers of pet food to the elderly on a monthly basis.
A good driving record and a willingness to have a Florida Department of Law Enforcement background check are required for this program
if you will be visiting seniors' homes.
    • PET VISITATION PROGRAM (PVP) - Anyone who has ever loved a pet knows there is comfort - and even healing power - that can come from the unconditional love of an animal. As a PVP TEAM, you and your own family pet will bring joy, education, companionship and stimulation to people in need. PVP TEAMS routinely visit sick children and brain-injured patients in a hospital setting, as well as senior citizens in adult day care and long-term care facilities.
    • SPECIALIZED PET VISITATION PROGRAMS - For experienced PVP Teams, we offer specialized programs like WAGGING TALES, which focuses on increasing a child's level of confidence so they can become better readers and our T.E.A.C.H. PROGRAM, which offers specialized visitation and animal care lessons for at-risk youth.
All pets must first pass a physical and behavioral evaluation before being considered for the Pet Visitation Program. For safety reasons, pets must be at least 18 months old to be considered, and handlers must be at least 18 years old to participate. All PVP pets must be spayed or neutered. Each PVP Team is required to make a minimum of two visits per month and attend a Program meeting each quarter. Additional training is required!
    • YAPPERS - Are you under the age of 18 and needing Community Service hours? Our YOUTH ACTION PROJECTS (YAP) are for you! We have some good ideas from which you can choose, from visiting the shelter and writing a report about the animals to conducting a pet food drive in your community.

Volunteer applications may be mailed, dropped off in person, or faxed to either shelter.
