Teaching
Animal Lessons to Kids (T.A.L.K.)
T.A.L.K.
is part of the humane education initiatives of the SPCA of Central Florida,
with an emphasis on companion animals. Began in 1997 with seed money
provided by Walt Disney World Conservation Initiatives and the Community
Foundation of Central Florida, the program supports our local education
system and the mandate of Florida Statute 233.061 that requires Florida
schools to teach kindness to animals as part of school curricula.
Approximately
40% of the students participating in T.A.L.K programs were considered
"special needs" students (at risk, behavioral problems, language
barriers, learning disabilities, mental and physical disabilities).
The primary program topics included:
- How
to protect and care for pets
- How
to protect yourself with strange or aggressive animals.
Since its
inception, the T.A.L.K. program has evolved, and its principles have
become the core of all Society programs that touch children. Emphasis
of all related programs is based on the belief that humane education,
beginning very early on, is one of the best tools for teaching respect
for all life and for preventing cruelty not only to animals, but also
to humans.
