Surgery After-Care

Surgery After-Care

Your pet has had major surgery. Here are some things to remember.

After Surgery:

  • Your pet needs to stay inside and quiet for the next 7 days. Limit your pet's activity and do not allow any running, jumping or climbing.
  • Dogs must be walked on a leash. Do not allow your dog to roam free outside.
  • Do not bathe your pet for 1 week after surgery.
  • Your pet may be uncoordinated, weak and/or nauseated from the anesthesia during the first 24 hours after surgery.

Things to watch out for:

  • Loss of appetite for more than 2 days
  • Refusal to drink water for more than 1 day
  • Weakness or lethargy after 24 hours
  • Vomiting after 24 hours
  • Diarrhea after the first 3 days

If you notice any of the above signs please contact our medical clinic immediately! It is your responsibility to seek any necessary treatment that your pet may require.

The incision site:

  • Watch your pet's incision site for any bleeding, drainage, excessive swelling or if the incision opens.
  • Female animals will occasionally develop a firm lump around the incision site. This is normal. If the swelling is soft or pouch-like, the animal will need to see a veterinarian.

Feeding:

  • If your pet was spayed or neutered today wait until approximately 7:00pm before offering your pet a small amount of food or water. Your pet may feel some nausea after the anesthesia and may not want to eat. This is normal. If your pet does eat he/she may have an upset stomach and vomit. This is also normal.
  • The veterinary staff will advise you of the type and quantity of food you should feed your pet.

Watch your pet carefully. We will provide post-operative care during our normal business hours. The numbers to contact for post-operative care are:

  • Orlando clinic: 407-351-7722, ext. 227
  • Sanford clinic: 407-323-8685, ext. 223.
  • Because of the high-volume of phone calls received by the Medical Clinics, you may reach voice mail when you call these numbers. If this is the case, please leave a detailed message on the voice mail. The message should include your name, a daytime phone number, the time when you will be available for a callback, the reason for your call, and when you hope to schedule an appointment. The staff are committed to providing you with excellent service. Your thoughtful use of voice mail will help in this process.

If you cannot reach the SPCA of Central Florida, or it's after hours, you MUST contact either a private vet's office or the emergency vet clinic.

The numbers for area emergency clinics are (407) 644-4449 or (407) 438-4449. The SPCA is not affiliated with these clinics and will not assume any responsibility for any costs incurred there or at any other private veterinarian office.
