Programs
and Services for the Community
If you
haven't visited one of our two shelters
recently, you have missed one of the most surprising and rewarding experiences
of your life. Here are some important things to know about the programs
and services of the SPCA of Central Florida:
- 13,692 companion animals were received
in FY07 from community members who were unable or unwilling to continue
their care.
- Pets sheltered in our agency receive the very best
car, and 6,388 healthy and friendly pets found new
permanent homes.
- Every pet adopted from our agency is spayed/neutered
and vaccinated before leaving for its new home. In FY07, 3,980 adopted
shelter pets were spayed/neutered.
- The Cozy
Care Center provides a quiet setting
for those animals who contract upper respiratory, kennel cough or
other minor, treatable illnesses.
- In FY07, our Cruelty
Investigator followed up on more than
2,141 questions on cruelty, neglect and abandonment. Of these inquiries,
576 were neglect cases; 105, cruelty cases; 45, abandonment; 29, emergency
care; and 28, Crime Line referrals. Subsequently more than 175 pets
were transferred to the Society's care, with 10 of them needing extra
veterinary care.
- Through our F.A.S.T.
HELP program, 321 pets were relinquished
to our facilities from other animal welfare or animal control agencies,
providing them with a second chance at a good life.
- Both locations have affordable public
vet clinics, available for use by anyone
in the community, and our mobile unit is active in both Sanford and
Kissimmee on a regular basis.
- Seven veterinarians are on staff at the Society.
Their credentials and reputations are excellent.
- Staff veterinarians spayed/neutered 12,507 pets through
our shelter and public vet clinics, preventing the births of millions
of unwanted animals.
- 32,264 community companion animals received services
through our clinics and mobile unit, helping to keep both pets and
people alike healthy and safe.
- 85 senior citizens, and their 150 pets, in Orange,
Seminole and Osceola Counties receive monthly deliveries of free pet
food through the Pet
Food Xpress program. The Society's vet
clinics also provided free, and much needed, vet care for many of
these animals.
- Through Project
F.A.I.T.H., we have sheltered and provided
free vet care for 46 pets of families in crisis. These pets remain
in our care while their families make plans for the future.
- Hundreds of senior citizens, patients with brain
injuries, and children in the hospital regularly received visits from
pet
visitation teams, bringing with them
the unconditional love that only pets can provide.
- Teaching
Animal Lessons to Kids (T.A.L.K.) and
Character and Humane Animal Teaching (C.H.A.T.) are education programs
geared to children, emphasizing kindness to animals, animal care and
safety. This year, 49,838 children and adults have heard the message
of promoting responsible human behavior toward animals.
- 255
volunteers support the Society's many programs and services.
- Every day, Society staff answer
questions from worried or concerned
pet owners on every imaginable topic they might have regarding the
care and health of their pets.
