Invested
in Prevention
Everything
starts with spay/neuter surgeries. It is the building block for preventing
pet overpopulation
and toward saving homeless animals.
With this
belief in mind, in 1992, the SPCA of Central Florida hired its first
staff veterinarian and opened its first shelter spay/neuter clinic in
Orlando. This guaranteed that all pets adopted from our facility would
be spayed/neutered before going to their new homes. At the request of
the community, in 1993, the Society opened its first low-cost spay/neuter
clinic, in Orlando, for the general public throughout the region. As
part of its mission, the Society wanted to make access into the clinic
easy and affordable for all. Spay/neuter prices were well below cost,
and this remains the practice today.
Is the
investment in prevention working? You bet it is! In FY91 - before the
Society introduced its spay/neuter programs - 13,575 companion animals
were received into our Orlando shelter. In FY07, that number had dropped
to 9,026 companion animals received in our Orlando shelter!
With the
merger of the former Humane Society of Seminole County into the SPCA
of Central Florida in June 2001, one of our first priorities was the
renovation of that facility including the creation of a new medical
unit. For the first time, pets adopted from the Sanford facility are
spayed/neutered before going to their new homes. For the first time,
the general public's companion animals are now able to access spay/neuter
surgeries at an affordable price at two Society locations.
Since our clinic opened at our Sanford location, 11,603 spay/neuter
surgeries have been performed by SPCA staff veterinarians.
