Pet-Friendly Apartments

They look like the perfect family. They would make terrific residents. Their credit history is flawless. But wait….they have a pet…and what a pet it is. He's a friendly, big, black and brown, lab mix, male dog, named Billy. And the apartment property has a size and weight restriction for pets. Goodbye, perfect residents.

They look like the perfect family. They would make terrific pet owners. Their adoption interview and questionnaire reinforced the decision to allow the pet adoption of the friendly, big, black and brown, lab mix, male dog, named Billy. But wait. The counselor needs to contact the landlord for the apartment's pet policies. Oh, no. There is a size and weight restriction for pets. Back to the kennels, Billy. Goodbye, perfect pet owners.

Every year, through our two shelter locations, approximately 12,000 companion animals are received from community members who are no longer able to care for them. Central Florida's population is growing rapidly, and it is also a highly mobile population. All too often, the reason given for turning in a family pet to our shelters is the apartment property has restrictions on pets and/or the pet deposit is too high for the tenant at the same time s/he is being asked for rent and other security deposits.

However SPCA staff know all too well the damage a pet can do to a home when owners ignore their responsibilities. When looking at apartments to rent, tell the leasing agent the good news about your pet. (Consider providing a "Pet Resume" in writing.) Tell the leasing agent:

_____ Your pet is spayed/neutered.
_____ Your dog been to obedience school or had other special training.
_____ You always clean up after your dog.
_____ Your dog always walks on a leash.
_____ You routinely bathe and groom your dog.
_____ You work with your pet to be sure it has lots of exercise.
_____ Your cat is litter box trained.
_____ Your cat is kept indoors at all times.
_____ You have an ongoing relationship with a local veterinarian.
_____ Your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations.
_____ Your pet is protected against fleas and ticks.
_____ Your pet wears an identification tag at all times.
_____ Your pet has been microchipped.
_____ You routinely make arrangements for pet care when you are on vacation.
_____ Your pet has successfully lived in an apartment before.
_____ You have/can provide a recommendation from your previous landlord.
