Adopt Now…or Wait

Take this "Perfect Timing" quiz as you decide if a new pet should be added to your family.
Answer Yes or No to the following questions.

_____ I recently lost a pet through death, disappearance, or the end of a personal relationship.
_____ My living arrangements will be changing in the near future.
_____ My job requires long hours away from home.
_____ I recently experienced the end of a close personal relationship.
_____ A new baby has been/will soon be added to my family.
_____ I want a pet to help teach my child responsibility.
_____ A pet would be a terrific gift for someone I know.
_____ Some of my family members have difficulties with allergies.
_____ Someone close to me has died recently.
_____ Money is "tight" at this time.
_____ Not everyone in my family agrees that adopting a pet is a good idea at this time.
_____ I'm not sure if my landlord allows pets.
_____ I think pets should be kept outside for all/most of the time.
_____ I am/some member of my family is experiencing serious health problems.
_____ I travel often.
_____ I am the caretaker for an elderly or ill family member/friend.
_____ I'm unsure about whether I will have a job next year at this time.
_____ I am/have recently been in an abusive relationship.

Unlike other quizzes that give you a specific score, answering YES to any of the questions listed above means NOW is the time to carefully think through your decision to bring a new pet into your home.

Pets bring unconditional love into our lives and our homes, but they are a responsibility - a lifetime commitment. Temporary housing in a shelter is far from ideal for companion animals. However, it is much harder on a pet to leave the shelter only to be returned to the shelter by an owner who is experiencing significant life changes and/or who had unrealistic expectations about his/her ability to provide lifetime care for the pet.

If the time is not quite right for you to seriously consider adopting a shelter pet, perhaps you would consider becoming a Shelter Volunteer. In this way, you can experience the unconditional love of dozens of cats and dogs each time you volunteer!
