About
the SPCA of Central Florida
We're
your local Humane Society
saving pets since 1937!
The Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Central Florida,
Inc. is an independent, autonomous, private, non-profit, 501(c)(3),
full-service, animal welfare organization. Our Tax ID # is 59-0637883.
Founded
in 1937, the Society is Central Florida's oldest, largest, best known,
well-respected animal welfare agency. As an open door facility, it's
important for you to know there are no time limits on how long an animal
will remain in our care while waiting to be adopted into a new home.
We have a 100% adoption rate for those animals who are healthy and friendly.
Our Mission
is
to promote responsible human behavior toward animals.
Our Vision is
to no longer be needed.
Setting
the record straight about the SPCA of Central Florida
Here is
what we are not:
- We are
NOT the same as, or affiliated with, Animal Control
or Animal Services. These agencies are governed and operated by local
cities or counties. Animal Control or Services agencies are responsible
for picking up strays, dealing with nuisance animals, and enforcing
local animal codes.
- We are
NOT a branch or chapter of the ASPCA (American Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), located in New York City.
- We are
NOT a branch or chapter of the HSUS (Humane Society
of the United States), located in Washington, DC.
- We are
NOT a branch or chapter of the AHA (American Humane
Association) located in Denver, CO.
- We do
NOT have a facility in Winter Garden, FL.
- We do
NOT pay dues to any national organization. All funds
raised in support of our programs and services remain in our community.
- We do
NOT receive county, state or federal funding.
- We do
NOT receive funding from Heart of Florida United Way.
- We do
NOT pay fees to any fundraising consultant or solicitor.
The organization receives 100% of each donation.
And here's
some of what we are:
- We ARE
responsible for raising money to support our services, clinics and
programs through fees for service, sponsorships, grants, bequests,
special events and individual donations.
- We ARE
an America's Charities agency (#4545), a relatively new workplace
giving campaign organization.
- We ARE
a member of the Combined Federal Campaign (#9045.)
- We ARE
a local non-profit 501 (c) 3 that relies on the community to help
us help the region's tens of thousands of companion animals in need.
Without YOU, we can't exist.
What's
in a name?
The work of an "SPCA" and a "Humane Society" are
the same
just two different, but interchangeable, names for agencies
whose mission is to protect and care for companion animals.
The original
name for the SPCA of Central Florida was the Orlando Humane Society/SPCA
of Central Florida. However, as a result of the mergers of two other
local humane societies into the Orlando Humane Society/SPCA of Central
Florida in 2001 and 2002, the first half of our name was eliminated.
The merged agencies included the Humane Society of Seminole County and
Osceola County Humane Society.
The new
name - the SPCA of Central Florida - represents the Society's regional
approach to problem-solving and providing programs and services for
Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Lake and Volusia Counties.
What
we do here
The SPCA of Central Florida is the leading animal welfare agency in
Central Florida with two shelters
and two spay/neuter clinics. They
are located in south Orlando (near the Millenia Mall) and Sanford (near
Flea World).
We serve
as an active resource center providing the community with a variety
of much needed programs and services, all designed to bring and keep
people and companion animals together. These include:
